I'm Nervous

Yeah, you could say that.
I'm nervous for a few reasons.

1. My sweet mother-in-law and a girl friend of hers, are both coming to visit this weekend for an antique glass show.

I'm excited for the show. This will be the third time that the three of us will go. We've always had a lot of fun. I'm nervous because of our finicky air conditioner. Thankfully they will both have fans in the rooms they'll stay in.

2. I received a call last Friday from an organization, and I returned it that day. I didn't hear anything yesterday, so I called today to reach C, in HR who called me. I'm excited to say, everything went really well.

C told me I'm overqualified (probably from my years of experience), but I'm not sure that's always a bad thing. C also said the other graphic designers are very impressed with my resume, skills, and previous jobs. I'll be sending more of my portfolio examples tomorrow, and we'll see what happens.

I'm nervous and excited because it's about a potential job. Read: Potential job = a second steady paycheck which we need. "Potential" - does not mean I have the job. I'm really nervous because it would be downtown, and I have mixed emotions about the possibility of moving half-way between that location, and J's job. I really don't want to drive in all that mess. Ugh.

I would love to say the name of the organization, but I haven't had a sit down interview yet. I don't even know if I will end up taking the job if they offer it. There's a part of me that really wants to yell and shout... just the name.

Image from Google Earth
If that picture didn't give it away, I don't know what would.

What would you do if you had the chance to work somewhere where:

1. It might benefit you for years to come.
2. It may not be the most challenging design position.
3. It has benefits, insurance, etc.
4. The location is downtown H-town.
5. You'd deal with lovely traffic every day, and sometimes on weekends.
6. Work hours are normal most days, but occasionally you'd work late.
7. Sometimes you would even work on weekends.

(I'll need to sit down and weigh the pros and cons.)
Who knows, they may not even offer me the job since I'm "overqualified".

First of all, I think your MIL and her friend will be fine. They have probably gone through the same trauma of bad AC. They want to visit you and see the show, so don't worry.

Secondly, about the potential employer, the landscape looks like they have fun at recess! As far as the traffic is concerned, you have just been blessed to be working at home and it will be fine. For me, if I am forced to be in traffic often, it gets almost mundane, but if I am out of it for a while, I get really scared about it. You'll be fine. You can keep looking for other jobs if the traffic is unbearable. At this point in your life, you are still relatively free. You don't have to locate child care nearby or worry that the provider will charge you a large surcharge if the traffic makes you 15 minutes late picking up a child. Or children. Now is a great time for you to spread your wings and explore your possibilities. EXPLORE!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!

I didn't quite understand about the moving part, but what I guess is that you think that IF you got a job downtown you'd need to move closer. Okay, maybe. Seems like you were thinking of moving away from the lousy air conditioner anyway. Just be glad you are still renting and aren't saddled with a mortgage on a home you can't sell for a profit.

Look at the possibilities instead of the negatives. If you get an interview, go in with your best stuff and see what happens. You may find that down-H-town is a pretty fun place to work. You may find that it isn't. Realize that it isn't permanent and that God has a reason for putting you wherever He arranges for you to go.

Not everything is as it seems. Keep your eyes open, but spend a lot of time in prayer. I'll do the same!

I love you, Hol!

I am also stressing over our ac issues for Saturday, Claire's party. We will have around 16 bodies milling around our home, doors opening and closing, high temperatures outside - ohhh even talking about it makes me cringe. As for the position, God never gives us more than we can handle so I think at least sitting down and weighing the pros and cons is a good thing that you're doing. Let me know how it turns out?

Congrats on the possible job! It's always hard making life changing decisions. I'll pray that you will have a clear vision from God as to what you should do. Good luck with that A/C! I'll be praying for that too :)

Thank you everyone for your comments and support. I really appreciate all of it.

In other news:
I sent my portfolio URL and some additional information to them today. I received a reply that they received it and will be in touch.

I'll pray for you to get guidance for your job. That looks like an interesting place to work.

As for the traffic, you might get used to it. (Small comfort, I know.) I almost wonder if the Google Maps feature of "Avoid Highways" might help. I don't know if that would be possible for that location.

But I'm sure everything will work out. There's a job with your name on it out there.

I hope you can get your air conditioner fixed soon! If I think Virginia is hot at this time of year… I hope the AC guys make it bearable soon!

Congrats on the potential job! That sounds like a great opportunity. My opinion would be... take the job. If it can benefit your future and make life right now a bit easier... then go for it. The best part about jobs is that you can always decided to do something else if the job is just not the right fit for you. But you seem excited about the potential. That is awesome!!
