Vancouver's Olympic Mascots Are Cute!

Our neighbors to the north, (that's Canada... Vancouver, BC to be exact), have released their mascots for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics/Paralympics. They are cutesy and cartoon like... and I really love them!

Honestly, there aren't too many "logos" that can pull this off. I've got to admit, Sasquatch as a mascot is pretty awesome! Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy of Meomi Design’s were awarded the job and I think they did a great job.

The mascots L to R are: "Quatchi", "Miga", and "Sumi" with sidekick "Mukmuk".

I'm just glad Canada was more thoughtful and intelligent about the designers they chose to create the mascots, compared to London's blunder earlier this year with the 2012 Olympic "logo/brand". Ugh what a mess.

Here is a comparison. Clean, fresh designs above a garish, hard to read design that looks thrown together.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics

London 2012 Olympics

Let me ask you this. Which design would you pay me for if I created them both? I know the one I would choose. Then I'd kick my own tail for accepting the London design.

As a designer, I am open to new ideas and ways of designing. On the other hand, creating something that is hard on the eyes and difficult to read, goes against some basic design principles.

At the same time, I understand that art is subjective. Someone might like one design because it is abstract, but they do not like another because it's too straightforward, and vice versa. Let's all keep our standards up and strive to create good design.

I have to agree with you! The London logos look like wadded up paper in different colors to me. I think Vancouver should be able to make a killing on little plush critters even before the olympics come around!

I love the Vancouver ones. They are so cute! Glee's right; I would be suprised if those little guys are not for sale in gift shops all over the place around the time of the events.

And this may just be a geek talking, but the London ones' numbers look like they say 20 > 2. At least they got the math right! They seriously need a refund on their 1; it's dented!
