Last Minute Plans

How was your Memorial weekend?

Up until Saturday, about mid-morning we had no plans… that is, until I received this text message from my sister-in-law K.

K: Hi Hol! How are you? Do you guys have plans this weekend?

Me: What did you have in mind? ;o)

K: We are going to the pool and BBQ-ing ribs tonight. More of the same tomorrow, and our neighbors are having a band. Wanna come up?

Me: Kira? (Asking if it was okay to bring her along.)

K: Bring her. The kids will love it.

Me: What can we bring? Like food, drinks, etc?

K: Yourselves and Kira… we have everything we need. We really want to see you guys!

Me: On our way. We'll be there in an hour… Just kidding! - But we are coming.

K: Awesome! We will see you in an hour. ;-) Send me a text when you are leaving so we kinda know when to expect you.

Me: Will do. Thanks!

K: You guys be careful… we are hangin' at the pool right now and B is going to start smokin' the ribs in an hour.

Me: Sounds good. Car loaded and about to be on the road.

So we packed, got in the car and drove to Austin to see J's brother B, sister-in-law K, and our niece KB and nephew KJ.

We hit rain on the way, saw a bit of water over the road, and sat through traffic backed up through six lights because the last signal had the power to it knocked out. We finally made it to B and K's house where we hung out and had a delicious dinner of ribs, coleslaw, corn on the cob, baked beans, and fruit. The kids had a great time playing with Kira too.

The next day was cloudy, so we didn't get to the pool. Thankfully by 3:00 pm it had cleared in time for the block's Memorial Day BBQ party. Everyone brought side dishes to pass, along with a meat of their choice to cook. There were two or three grills set up in the cul-de-sac so we could cook, visit with everyone, and the kids could ride bikes, get their faces painted, play games and throw water balloons. They loved that!

The band that played was a local group called UNB or Unnamed Band. They were really good too! They played a great mix of songs from the 60's to the 00's which entertained everyone into the evening when they wrapped up around 10:00 or 10:30 pm. They even let the kids play along with maracas on a few songs. It was cute watching the kiddos dance to the music and play in the lights shining on the driveway.

Once the band finished we walked the kids home, got them bathed and ready for bed. With them in bed, we decided to watch a movie before getting some sleep ourselves. The movie we saw was Paul Blart: Mall Cop. It was funny, but not as much as we had hoped it would be.

Monday was sunny and hot. K and I, along with the kids decided to take a walk to the park next to the pool after breakfast. It was decided that we'd definitely be going to the pool, but only a bit later since the country club had a Memorial Day pool party from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and it was too crowded. We figured that we would go after 3:00 pm, and hopefully it would be thinned out by that point.

Back home after our walk, we cooled off and got the kiddos a small snack so they would sit still, watch a movie and rest before lunchtime and going to the pool. K and I got burgers  ready with all the toppings set out, baked beans, fruit salad, and some more delicious coleslaw. B cooked the burgers with a couple hot dogs for the kids. Once they were ready we all had a nice lunch. Of course we waited about 45 minutes to an hour before going to the pool. There were things to do, and naps to attempt.

Finally. It was time to head to the pool. K's brother C got into town the night before and finished up work for the day in time to join us all at the pool. We had a great time playing, watching KB work on her swimming, and just relaxing with family.

Thanks B and K for inviting us to your home for the holiday weekend. We had a great time! Next time you'll all have to come visit us in H-town. Maybe we can go to the zoo and BBQ in our backyard.
