When I first saw this photo, it gave me chills. It is supposedly one of the first images posted online (via Twitter) by Janis Krums, a witness who was on a ferry boat going to rescue passengers.
This is what he wrote in his Twitter post along with the image:
"There's a plane in the Hudson. I'm on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy."
The pilot reported a "bird strike" and others have said, birds or a flock of birds were sucked into the engines causing them to cease working. It is said that there was a loud bang, the plane shook, and people could smell smoke.
Not long after, the pilot told the passengers to 'brace for impact'. This same pilot tried to get the plane back to LaGuardia Airport, however was unable to do so. He managed to guide the plane into the Hudson River where it "landed" fairly smoothly.
This pilot deserves a big hug, and an award. He did a great job landing the plane, along with the crew and the passengers at getting everyone off. Once the plane had landed in the water, the person sitting on the emergency row immediately opened the door and people were able to get out and stand on the wing of the plane. Then emergency crews, ferry boats, and the Coast Guard were able to rescue everyone on board before the plane sunk any further into the Hudson.
If you haven't heard the news about the US Airways plane crash in the Hudson River, you can read more about it here and here.
If you believe you may have had relatives on the flight, you can call US Airways at 1-800-679-8215 within the United States.
